Does this well intended statement miss the mark?

In this valuable TED talk, Wes Moore, author, former Army captain and paratrooper discusses how to to talk to a veteran about the war.

He joined the Army in 1996 at age 17 because “college is expensive.”  But he served in the Army for his troops.

In this sincere talk, he discusses what serving in the U.S, military means to him, but more importantly, what it means to the 2.6 million veterans of the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq.

For many, the job is still not done.  And the phrase “thank you for your service” rings hollow.
