5. Sean Connery

Connery enlisted in the Royal Navy at the age of 16, but after only three years of service, he was discharged because of a serious stomach ulcer. He is so young in his picture!

6. Arnold Schwarzenegger

In Austria, the government specifies that all men must serve one year in the military — so Arnold Schwarzenegger spent one year doing just that. The funny thing is that he once snuck out of camp for a week so he could take part in the Junior Mr. Europe contest. Rebel. He was only 18 in this photo.

7. Bea Arthur

Arthur was a badass lady. She worked as a typist and truck driver with the marines in World War II, and was honorably discharged in 1945 with the title of staff sergeant. On a personality appraisal sheet from her time in the Marines, Arthur was described as both argumentative, frank, and overly aggressive. Wonder if she would have been called those things if she were a man?

8. Drew Carey

Drew Carey spent 6 years in the U.S. Marines. He enlisted in 1980 after being expelled twice from Kent State University. Ouch. He says, “While in the Marine Reserves, I was looking for a way to make some more money, and it was suggested that I try using my jokes,” so he did stand up for the troops.
